Everyone we talked to recommended La Mision Loreto Hotel as their favorite hotel in Loreto. Our friends recommended Mision and the locals recommended Mision. It is a really nice hotel for such a small town. It’s centrally located, has nice ocean views and a nice pool, and is also one of the most expensive. It’s the clear favorite for a lot of visitors to Loreto, but it wasn’t our favorite hotel in Loreto.

Our favorite hotel in Loreto is a new boutique resort!
If you know me at all, you know I have to travel on a budget. As a result, I prefer to sacrifice a bit of luxury in accommodation to afford fun activities like scuba diving at Isla Coronado! Luckily, this time, I didn’t have to because we found the Pufferfish Villas.
We were looking for something quieter, something more quaint and personal than your average hotel in Loreto. We were also looking for something less expensive if I’m being completely honest. We stumbled upon Pufferfish Villas and decided to give them a try. Just to be clear, I paid full price and was not offered anything to promote this place.
Though not technically a hotel, it’s a newly constructed boutique resort— a small scattering of luxury villas with a private pool, and has all of the personal touches we were looking for as well as the peace and quiet that only comes with being a mile or so out of the main town square.
When we first saw the listing we thought there’s no way the resort could be as nice as it looked online, especially because it was actually cheaper than Hotel Mision and a similar price to Hotel Oasis which are two of the highest recommended resorts in town. I can honestly say it is just as nice if not even better than Hotel Mision and so much better than Hotel Oasis which we would NOT stay in again (see why in my YouTube video below).
These little touches made Pufferfish Villas our favorite hotel in Loreto:
Before arriving, we received the gate code for the property and the door code for our own personal villa. Just walking in the door, we knew immediately we’d made the right choice. We knew we’d found the best hotel in Loreto.
Unlike every other hotel in Loreto, this place was quiet and really private since it’s a ways out of town. Luckily, free bikes were provided, so getting to town was an easy five minute ride or a nice 15 minute beach walk. The beach was only a block away!
We rode all over town, even back from dinner across town in the dark one night (bike headlights were also provided) and felt totally safe the entire time. The beach cruisers were definitely a major highlight for us, but only one of the many little touches Dooglass and Esperanza, the owners, carefully thought out.
Other highlights include a drinking water dispenser in the villa, laundry on-site, a small scattering of essentials for purchase in a pinch, and free beach gear if we needed it. I also noticed a lot of outlets in both the room and pool area which is really helpful for charging camera gear or working remotely. Dooglass even checked in on us to make sure everything was going alright, and helped us call a taxi when it was time to leave.
The Pool Villa
We inadvertently booked Villa 1. The beautifully decorated pool area was the view from our bedroom and kitchen windows! The pool area is honestly much nicer than the pool at hotel Oasis, and much less crowded than Hotel Mision.
The outdoor lounge area is incredibly relaxing, functional, and visually appealing. Plus, we had a full kitchen in our room and outdoor bbq area to reheat food or cook our own unlike the other two hotels. There is even a fire pit outside for the cooler time of year! Our room at Hotel Oasis didn’t even have a mini fridge (or enough water pressure to wash my hair).
Would we stay here again?
Only after arriving and speaking with another guest, we found out that the owners have documented their journey with Pufferfish Villas on YouTube, and that constructing a boutique resort was their lifelong dream. I wish I would have known that ahead of time or I would have offered a collaboration with my own YouTube channel!
I’m honestly stoked to support them because staying in their villas was a major highlight of our most recent trip to Loreto. Plus, the reasonable price saved us enough money that we could splurge on a day of scuba diving at Isla Coronado! It was literally a win-win. I’d definitely stay at the Pufferfish Villas again without question.
How to Book our Favorite Hotel in Loreto
There are a couple ways to book with Pufferfish Villas. Either you can search “Pufferfish Villas Loreto” in VRBO below and look for “Baja Lux Villa I”, OR you can just click one of the photos below which should take you to the booking page. Currently there are only two Villas, but I’ll do my best to update this article when more are available.
